With a full Student Executive recruited by WK 6, we kicked off the first semester with a strong start with the introduction of our new Leadership Development Program, part funded by the Bank of Ireland Enablement fund.
The purpose of this program is to equip the Student Executive who are elected officers, with leadership skills to help them to clarify their objectives while in office and develop their personal leadership and communication skills to become effective in their roles.
The program is presented over 6 sessions spread across the academic year. There are a variety of methodologies used to deliver this program such as, facilitated workshops, one on one & group coaching, activities, facilitated “socratic” style conversations, case study and reflective practice.
The training to date has comprised of goal setting, with a specific focus on working with the University on updating the Student Charter. To date the training has been challenging, exciting and with significant reflective learning along the way.
In Wk 6 the team were taken to Killarney to focus team collaboration, assess how they work under pressure and define what good and poor leadership looks like.
The weekend ended with a climb of Carrauntoohil only to be forced to turn back half way up, due to poor weather conditions. A strong but tough lesson to be learned for 9 determined young leaders who were reluctant to give up but reminded that the mountain isn’t going anywhere and will be there for the next climb planned for Spring time.
